I wouldnt use i.redd.it | Keep ownership over your content

Reddit allows for easy image uploading and linking through the platform itself. In the past using Imgur or another free image hosting service may have been needed to submit and post you image to Reddit.

i.redd.it is the URL, you can check out the posts submitted on this domain here. It is a very well used feature of Reddit however things are not what they seem.

Reddit has transitioned in the past couple of years from a fresh, informative site to one filled with shills, ads and mods shaping it to their own opinion. A look at Reddits User ageement gives good insight onto why you should not be uploading your images with Reddit.

Note reference to services means i.redd.it (images) v.redd.it (video)

By submitting Your Content to the Services, you represent and warrant that you have all rights, power, and authority necessary to grant the rights to Your Content contained within these Terms. Because you alone are responsible for Your Content, you may expose yourself to liability if you post or share Content without all necessary rights.

By uploading to Reddit you must have ownership of the content because if there is an issue its on you however… This is the more worrying part and it is very much /r/ChoosingBeggars/ material and a loss of control over what you uploaded.

You retain any ownership rights you have in Your Content, but you grant Reddit the following license to use that Content:

When Your Content is created with or submitted to the Services, you grant us a worldwide, royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable, non-exclusive, transferable, and sublicensable license to use, copy, modify, adapt, prepare derivative works from, distribute, perform, and display Your Content and any name, username, voice, or likeness provided in connection with Your Content in all media formats and channels now known or later developed. This license includes the right for us to make Your Content available for syndication, broadcast, distribution, or publication by other companies, organizations, or individuals who partner with Reddit. You also agree that we may remove metadata associated with Your Content, and you irrevocably waive any claims and assertions of moral rights or attribution with respect to Your Content.

Reddit can profit from your content from ads, using the content in marketing campaigns, editing it, using it for branding, use it to promote Reddit  and give these rights and access to anyone who partners with Reddit.

Reddit wants to own your content, profit from your content but if anything goes wrong and the content is a liability its your fault. Talk about not having it both ways.

The aspect of handing over the rights for the content to Reddit is another slippery slope. For some, maybe most people uploading memes and screenshots to Reddit gives no worries. Most of the content uploaded to Reddit could be reposted and years old content anyway but if you’re a designer, photographer, artist, videographer or anyone creating and working with images/video why would you give over the rights?

Its your content, you made/created/took it. There is enough DMCA copyright issues going around on platforms that make it all the more obvious to control your content.

Alternatives

It is not only cheap but also very easy to set up your own domain name and hosting with a WordPress or image hosting script like Chevereto. That way you keep full control over your content and avoid giving up rights and any potential copyright issues down the path.

From this instead of uploading the image to Reddit you simply link it and keep full ownership over it.
