Snapchat’s ugly update to help foster its click bait

When i first used Snapchat it was 2012, the app was as basic as ever and I could have chosen almost any username i was a true early adopter. You could only send camera photos to other users; no stories, filters, stickers or the dreaded click bait rubbish content that is prominent today.

snapchat sucks

Flick through to early 2018 and Snapchat has taken a right turn and bamboozled its users. An update was pushed that threw the whole app on its head and shook it, your friends stories are now tucked away in messages and where the stories used to be is the waste of time click bait rubbish that Snapchat loves because of ad revenue.

As I look into my featured section here are the titles for the “content”:

  • Crazy facts you never knew were true
  • Is this parenting advice Kylie is getting from her family?
  • Family’s hilarious bad photo shoot goes viral
  • Deadpool 2’s release date has been moved up
  • Dog found starving is so HUGE and FLUFFY now
  • 26 Things all lazy girls know to be true
  • 13 weirdly Delicious McFlurry flavours you’ve never had
  • Whats this owl and fox doing?
  • The people selling haunted dolls on eBay

Clearly not a single one of those topics is even worth the energy to tap with my thumb. Sure I get that people can be bored, but how bored do you have to be to watch that rubbish? These sorts of modern-day content creators should come under the title of click baiters because that’s all they do.

BrotherHQ is one of these modern-day rubbish bins, dragging ‘facts’ or basic knowledge into short videos with horrible actors that get published on Snapchat each day.

These sorts of modern-day content creators should come under the title of click baiters because that’s all they do.

Now there really is only one reason this problem exists, firstly because for what ever reason people are clicking the content which given its click bait nature i suspect kids watch a lot. Secondly ad revenue, Snapchat is riddled with ads in-between friends stories or this ‘featured content’ (rubbish).

Advertising is Snapchats money-maker the new update helps pave the way for more content from these agencies like BrotherHQ and TheDodo to roll out rubbish on the daily and that means more ads so more money.

Well done Snapchat going for the money over caring for your user base, Instagram stories all of a sudden got more pleasing.
