Installing FFmpeg on Ubuntu

How to install the popular media processing library FFmpeg on an Ubuntu server. The steps are straight forward and minimal.

First start by updating your package list with:

sudo apt update

Then install FFmpeg with:

sudo apt install ffmpeg

You will be prompted with a confirmation and it will begin to download and install.

Once finished, check FFmpeg is installed by calling for its version:

ffmpeg -version

This will return a load of information like this example:

ffmpeg version 4.2.1-0york0~18.04.1 Copyright (c) 2000-2019 the FFmpeg developers
built with gcc 7 (Ubuntu 7.4.0-1ubuntu1~18.04.1)
............
............

If it returns the FFmpeg version then you have successfully installed FFmpeg.
